3 Ayurvedic Self-Care Daily Rituals

Ayurveda originated in India and it is one of the oldest medical practices (almost three thousand years ago) The basic belief is an inextricable bond between the mind, body and soul. According to Ayurvedic medicine there are three energies believed to circulate in the body and govern physiological activity. So I’ve put together 3 Ayurvedic self-care daily rituals that are easy to follow and implement.

Adopting just one or more of the Ayurvedic self-care practices can radically alter your experience of the day and cleanse from inside out. 

Rise Before the Sun

Ayurvedic philosophy says that waking up an hour and half before sunrise helps you synchronize with the rhythm of sun, which is a time of pure consciousness.

Vata energy fills the atmosphere during these pre-dawn hours , and since Vata is known for movements this is the ideal time to rise. 

Mouth Health

Ayurveda recommends we scrape away any white coating on the tongue. This coating is perceived as ama or toxins. By scrapping as soon as we rise, we avoid ingesting these toxins.

Tongue scrappers are sold in many health food stores but the back of a spoon works as well. Scrape the tongue GENTLY, working from the back to the front. Use seven to fourteen strokes to cover the entire area. This will unearth your taste buds and help eliminate the accumulated toxins

Eat Wisely

Keep your Doshas in Balance. Listen to your body and learn about all the types of foods that can aggravate your Dosha type.

“Doshas” in Ayurveda refer to your unique physical and mental constitution, which influence your personal well-being. Each person has their own dominant dosha or combination of two or three of these elemental forces. Knowing yours can help you maintain balance through seasonal changes for lasting health and peace of mind.  You learn more about Doshas here.

Dosha Types:

Vata:  don’t respond well to bitter, astringent and spicy foods

Recommended: Sweet, sour and salty foods

Pitta: don’t respond well to hot, spicy, oily, fried, salty, fermented foods, too much alcohol

Kapha: don’t repond well to overindulgence in food in general it is recommended: consume low-fat and light foods

We are big time foodies here at The Wild Guru. During our visit to the beautiful island of Koh Phangan, Thailand, we toured around the island and discovered some pretty awesome cafes/restaurants on the North West side of the island (Sri Thanu). This area is also a well-known mecca for yoga schools, healing and meditation centers, and retreats: the perfect combination for a lovely vacay in paradise.

Getting back to our favorite subject: FOOD! We are sharing with you a solid and concise list of our top 5 restaurants that you must check out while in Phangan that offer tasty and creative vegan food. (list is in order of amazingness)

# 1 Eat. Co: The food here is just beyond incredible. Their whole menu is 100% vegan and the staff is super friendly.

Food explodes in flavors and the desserts are a must! Our favorite dishes include: cheesy kebab chip bomb or the kebab burger, hummus and Co (breakfast menu), bean me up bowl and you can’t skip their baked Twix dessert bar.

 

#2 Green Gallery: A super cute laid-back eatery ran by two lovely Israeli sisters. Their menu has plenty to offer on starters, mains, sandwiches and drinks. With delicious Middle East inspired dishes and perfect portions, this place will keep calling you back. Our favorite dishes include: shawarma plate or sandwich style, falafel sandwich, mushroom and onion pie, vegan cream cheese pastry and burekas.

Today I’d like to focus on the physical, mental and emotional! For many reasons some of us forget to stop for a minute to give time to ourselves either because of busy schedules or simply because we don’t think it will make a difference or have an impact in your daily life.

The fact is that if you love yourself more, you will be more successful. Self-care will wrap you around positive energy and lift you. I have gathered some tips to help you love yourself more and keep you sharp, motivated and healthy from inside out.

·      Stay inspired! Watch documentaries/ TED talks or take an online course to learn a new skill.

·      Express and manifest: Do some journaling or practice meditation.

·      Disconnect to connect: unplug from technology. Turn off your phone for a couple of hours.

·      Let go: de-clutter your closet/cabinets and while doing so, donate what you don’t need to those  who are in need. Putting a smile on someone’s face will fill your heart with flowers <3

·      The time is NOW: stop waiting for the weekend, for summer, for love…today is what you have.

·      Get out: discover where your closest state park is, connect with nature, pick a day to go for a hike or walk and appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds you.

·      Sanctuary rituals: earth is home. Find ways that you can help keep her and her inhabitants happy and clean. Recycle, participate in beach clean ups, donate to animal shelters or sanctuaries that protect wild life.

The Power of Mudras

Let me give you a little bit of a back story about this blog and what took me to research more about this fascinating topic.

I have four Unalomes tattooed inside each of my fingers. A couple of months ago I was showing my friend Kimani my Unalomes and as I was showing her my tattoos I folded my index and middle finger and pointed the rest of the fingers at her so she could take a look at the art detail on my fingers. Right away my friend re-arranged my hand to point away from her and she proceeded me to explain how your hand and fingers redirect energy flow. She also showed me which finger corresponded to the five basic elements (fire, air, earth, water, and ether).

I had know about hand gestures used in Hinduism but I had no idea what they meant or more importantly the innate powers hands hold.

  Mudras can be used to instigate particular energy flows and stimulate different emotions, spiritual reactions, and reactions in the body.  By pressing together, curling, touching or pointing different fingers or parts of the hands you can stimulate reflexes from the hand to the brain, stimulate endorphins, change your mood and increase your vitality.

It is said that there exist close to 399 mudras that have been used for centuries! Most commonly, they are performed during meditation or in pranayama practice but they can performed at anytime during your personal ritual as long as they are done in full concentration and in a state of serenity.

Today I am sharing with you a very special Mudra for this month: More Love- inspired by the Anahata Chakra (fourth Chakra) This Mudra amplifies the energy of love.

You can sit on a Lotus asana or lay down, place your thumbs right on your chest (Fourth chakra), take some time to send your intentions to the universe and take a few deep breaths.

The new year is a chance for an easily trackable fresh start (because technically, you can start fresh any day).  It’s a time to reflect on the previous year and build on the success that was part of it. If last year was the year of active yoga trends then this year is the year of the ‘inner-active’ yoga trend. If last year was the year of taking up new hobbies, this year is the year of new skills. And if last year was the year of staycations, then this is the year of holidays (we like the sound of holidays better than vacations).  Here are the 3 Ways to Make 2018 your year.

Kundalini Yoga is more focused on the spiritual/conscious than the physical. If you’re seeking to grow in 2018, then let that be an inner, spiritual growth. You want to travel more? It’s really simple, you just have to work really hard at it. It sounds a bit odd, but that’s really the answer. Work hard at building a skill that will allow you to work remotely or make a deal with your boss to work remotely.  Or, create another source of income by buying from garage sales and reselling on eBay or even on apps like Poshmark or your own Instagram account (you’d be surprised how much you can make on items you find on garage sales).
